Description:
John Willis Mason (1829 - 1901) was a patient in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital periodically between 1864 and his death in the Asylum in 1901, having also been a patient of Millholme House in Musselburgh, Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries, and Sunnyside Asylum in Montrose. This scrapbook is the earlier of two created by Mason that were collected by the Physician Superintendent of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, Thomas Clouston (1840 - 1915). Clouston collected patient artwork and writings in order to further his understanding of mental illness. Mason was a prolific writer and artist, patenting a world clock, editing the Asylum magazine (The Morningside Mirror), taking part in the Literary Society and producing numerous sketches and watercolours. This page features an account of 'The Godiva Procession', cut from 'The Coventry Herald and Free Press, August 10 1883', which began on previous pages. This page features the final part of a section, @Dissatisfaction in Chapel Fields', started on the previous page.
