Description:
All three of these images are from Vol. 1 in the collection of 3 volumes held at the Center for Research Collections. This work was done as an ongoing prject that allowed Piranesi to document architecture, because although he did etchng as a profession, he always considered himself an architect. They are part of the art collection/book Vedute di Roma published in 1778, the same year as Piranesi's death. Piranesi created these etched views of Rome from 1747 to 1778. This image is the later of the three, being made in 1762, but is far from the last of Piranesi's works. The Port of Ripa Grande is located on the Tiber, Italy's third longest river. The port itself was rebuilt in the 17th century, making Piranesi's etching a more modern representation of a port that was highly influencial in the time of the ancient Romans.
