Description:
The floral border of this page contains the Royal Arms of Scotland, a red lion rampant on a yellow background, supported by two unicorns. Also within the border are three instances of the letters "P" and "L" or "J" joined by a lover's knot. Below one of these joinings, a man in green draws a bow to aim at a long legged grey bird above the joining. An illuminated scene within the floral border depicts an episode from the Aeneid. In the foreground, Aeneas is received by Dido in the forest. Aeneas is dressed richly in blue and gold armor, carrying a spear and with a sword at his side. Dido is dressed in a yellow tunic with a blue cape, and carries a bow in one hand and arrows in the other. Her long blonde hair is loose. At their feet are 6 hunting dogs of various colors, and two rabbits graze under the trees. To the left of the figures, a body of water flows up to the walls of a city, meant to be Carthage. 8 boats are arriving via the water, all full of a multitude of armored soldiers in red, green, blue, and yellow. They are received by women at the walls of the city, one of which, made of brick, is still being built by 4 workmen. Within the walls, a royal couple dine at a table draped in white cloth, and are served and serenaded by men with trumpets. The city scene continues into the distance. Below the scene are the first two lined of the Aeneid, in gold on a blue background.

Provenance Notes:
The border decoration and style indicate that the manuscript was possibly executed in Rouen, France. Due to the occurrence of the Scottish Royal Arms in the border of f. 65, it is assumed that this book was executed for a Scottish owner. The initials, joined by a lover's knot that occurs on the same page as the Arms, belonged to the owners, although their identity is unclear. It is possible that it belonged to James III of Scotland, but variations in the crest throw that into doubt. The manuscript was presented to the university by John Colville when he graduated in 1654.
