Engraved title page for Old Mortality, vol. IX in the Magnum Opus Edition of the Waverley Novels. The illustration depicts the arrival of Henry Morton at Cuddie Headrigg's cottage upon his return from exile. The child is Cuddie' daughter. The inscription reads: 'The child set down its water-pitcher, hardly understanding what was said to her, put her fair flaxen hair apart on her brows, and opened her round blue eyes with the wondering "what's yere wull?"' (ch. 37)
