Description:
Title page of Castle Dangerous, volume XLVII of a set of the Waverley Novels published by A. & C. Black, depicting St Bride's Church, Douglas, South Lanarkshire. In Sir Walter Scott's Castle Dangerous (1831), the disguised heroine, Lady Augusta de Berkely, takes up residence in the Abbey of St. Bride in the village of Douglas. Originally the parish church, the thirteenth-century Kirk of St Bride's became a mausoleum for the 'Black' Douglas family. The original wood engraving, possibly by Owen Jones after Noel Paton, was made for the Abbotsford edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
