Description:
Title page of The Highland Widow, etc, volume XLI of a set of the Waverley Novels published by A. & C. Black, depicting the Canongate Cross, Edinburgh. Sir Walter Scott's Chronicles of the Canongate were published in two Series (1827 and 1828) and purport to be narrated by Chrystal Croftangry, a resident in the Canongate, Edinburgh, who writes up the tales from the recollections of his friends and neighbours, Mrs Bethune Baliol and Miss Kate Fairscribe. The original wood engraving, probably by Owen Jones after William Douglas, was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
