Description:
Depicts the ruins of Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfriesshire. Ellangowan Castle, seat of the Bertrams in Sir Walter Scott's Guy Mannering (1815), is often thought to be based on Caerlaverock Castle which Scott visited with Guthrie Wright in 1806. The engraver may be John Landseer who signed the frontispieces to The Beauties of Scotland (presumably working from his own design).
