Description:
Engraved portrait of the English statesman Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658). Cromwell figures prominently in Sir Walter Scott's novel Woodstock (1826), which revolves around the escape of King Charles II following his decisive defeat by Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester (3 September 1651). Cromwell also features in further works on the religious and civil conflicts of the sixteenth century, including Rokeby (1813) and Peveril of the Peak (1823). His occupation of Scotland is described in Tales of a Grandfather, Second Series (1829). The original portrait by Robert Walker was painted ca. 1649.
