Description:
Engraved portrait of the French divine and historian Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704). In his Life of John Dryden (1808) Scott discusses the role played by the theological writings of Bossuet in Dryden's conversion to Catholicism. In an article on Molière for the Foreign Quarterly Review in 1828, he also defends the playwright against Bossuet's charge of profanity. The original portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud was painted in 1702.
