Description:
|
View of pages from the Gadala Georgois. On the left, St George is shown slaying a dragon while on horseback. Two columns of text may be seen on the right. Acquired by Edinburgh University from John Wilson, a former student, in 1871, the Gadala Georgois, or the Acts of Saint George according to St Theodotus of Ancyra, originates from Ethiopia and was brought to Edinburgh following the British Expedition to Abyssinia in 1868, according to a letter which is attached to the manuscript. A legendary history of Saint George, it probably dates to the 17th century, although it was attributed to St Theodotus of Ancyra, who died in 446CE, in order to give it legitimacy. Written on vellum and containing 20 illustrations, the Gadala Georgois is in two volumes and measures 30 by 26cm. It was restored in 1961, when the bindings were repaired.
