Description: 
George James Guthrie started as an apprentice to a surgeon and served as assistant at York Hospital. For five years from 1803 he served as assistant surgeon to the 29th regiment in Canada. He then went to the Peninsula where he remained from 1808 till 1814, tending to the war wounded at many important battles. In 1816 Guthrie founded the Eye Infirmary (later the Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital, London) and from 1828-1831 he was professor of anatomy and surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons. He was appointed surgeon to Westminster Hospital in 1827 where he remained until his resignation in 1843. Guthrie was three times elected president of the College of Surgeons, in 1833, 1841 and 1854. His major published work was 'Commentaries on the Surgery of the War', 1808-1815.
