Description:
|
As a student Joseph Barnard Davis went as a surgeon in a whaling ship to the Arctic seas in 1820. He gained the Apothecaries' Hall qualification in 1823 but did not become a member of the College of surgeons until 1843. In 1862 he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from St Andrew's University. For many years Davis dedicated himself to the study of craniology and gradually amassed a museum of skulls and skeletons of different races, larger than any in the public domain. His major work was 'Crania Britannica' which was published between 1856-1865.
