Following his education at Oxford University Willis took holy orders but his real love was medicine and he subsequently gained both MB and MD. He practiced at a hospital in Lincoln for several years and gained some expertise in the treatment of mental illnesses. In 1788 Willis was called upon to treat the 'madness' of the king who was then confined at Kew. In this he had some success despite the opposition of the medical establishment who regarded him as something of a 'quack' or charlatan.
