Inscribed on the reverse: "The mould that makes Penicillin / To the S.R.C. in memory of the 'Rectorial' / Alexander Fleming 1952 . Alexander Fleming was elected rector of the University in 1952. Born in Ayrshire, he was one of the great figures of 20th century medicine. Not only did he discover the antibiotic powers of penicillin, for which he shared the Nobel Prize, but he was the first to use anti-typhoid vaccines on human beings and pioneered the use of salvarsan for syphilis.
