Description:
A 'Book of Hours' contains portions of the daily church services, together with penitential psalms and other material for private devotion. The fine illuminations in this fifteenth century Book are distinguished by their vivid and lively interest in physiognomy. The illumination in this image is one of a series illustrating the Passion of Christ from the Hours of the Virgin. The book was given to the Library in 1679 by 'Mr Thomas Douglas, Doctor of Medicine'.
