Description:
|
Theodore de Beze was Calvin's successor in Geneva and set out to commemorate the great men of the Reformation by publishing their portraits and brief biography. To be able to publish a true likeness was evidently important for Beze, for where he did not have one he leaves a blank page. The Reformers include John Knox along with Luther Calvin and many others. The book is dedicated to James VI whose portrait appears as the frontispiece. Three years later James was also patron of the new College of Edinburgh, a Reformation institution, and so there is a close association between its foundation and Beze's book. This association and the sense of the importance of portraiture which Beze displays were perhaps reflected in the series of portraits of Reformers, including Knox himself, which hung in the university Library from an early date.
