Description:
Page 7 of 10. A hand-annotated, copy-edited article entitled “Mrs. Erskine, Lady Grange, in the Island of St Kilda”. The article was written by David Laing for the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in the journal “Proceedings of the Society, June 8, 1874” and it provides context for three sets of documents that Laing had acquired relating to Lady Grange. The hand annotations have been made by Laing and indicate changes and updates that he wished to make to the article. A revised version of the article adopting, among others, the changes that Laing has indicated throughout this document was published by Laing in November 1876 under the title “An Episode in the Life of Rachel Erskine, Lady Grange. Detailed by Herself in a Letter from St Kilda, January 20, 1738, And Other Original Papers” (a pdf of this article is available via http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/). All three documents discussed in the article are held in the Laing Collection and have been digitized (I. Letters from Lady Grange, St. Kilda, 1738, La.II.201, f.2; II. Letter to Charles Erskine, Lord Advocate Respecting Lady Grange, 1740, La.II.201, f.5; III. Letters from Lady Grange, St. Kilda, 1738, La.II.201, f.4). A fourth letter written by Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, discussed only in the 1876 version of Laing’s article, has also been digitized (Letter to Thomas Fraser from Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, La.II.201, f.7). Laing’s 1874 article includes a plate depicting a facsimile copy of Lady Grange’s handwriting, taken from her 1738 letter. Rachel Erskine (née Chiesley), Lady Grange, (1679-1745) was forcibly kidnapped and exiled to the isle of St Kilda in 1732. This plot was designed by her husband, James Erskine, Lord Grange, (1679-1754) out of fear that Lady Grange would expose him as a Jacobite. News of her plight began to be known when letters were smuggled off St Kilda in 1738, taking two years to reach Charles Erskine, Lord Advocate in Edinburgh in 1740. By this time, she had spent nearly nine years on the island in very poor living conditions. Although a rescue attempt was arranged, she was again kidnapped before this help could reach her. After 1740, she was moved to various locations in the islands, leading to her eventual arrival in Skye in 1742. She died unrescued on Skye in 1745.
