Description:
Three-quarter page miniature enclosed with gold lines surrounded by a border of colorful flowers and acanthus. Within the border, there are five grotesques, three huminoid and two animal. Clockwise from the upper left corner there are: a the torso of a man in a blue tunic and black hat aiming a crossbow, a grey bird-like creature with a humanesque face, a centaur with a brown horse's body wearing a red tunic and blue hat while blowing a horn, a mermaid naked from the waist up with a blue fish's tail holding a pan pipe and a large ring, and a mother eagle or hawk feeding her four chicks in a nest with blood from her own breast. In the foregorund of the miniature, a man with a beard, a worn black hat, and a red tunic highlighted in gold tends to three beehives. The bees can be seen throughout the image feeding on colorful flowers on the green grass. Beyond the beekeeper, possibly across a road, Maecenas, wearing a laurel, a blue tunic, and a white piece of cloth covered in flowers, reclines, and is approached by a blonde dryad, draped in translucent fabric. Behind them is a line of trees and a stream, beyond which is a scene of a man and woman tending a herd of cattle. The woman, wearing a black head covering, a red dress, and a white apron, milks one of the cows into an urn. To her left, the man, wearing a black hat, a light purple tunic and a blue cape, gazes at what appears to be the light of God shining down from heaven, represented as gold lines. Behind them, Pan, half-goat half-man and wearing an open blue tunic, has ceased playing his stringed instument or pipes and gazes to his left, where there is a city or castle beyond a boat-filled body of water.

Provenance Notes:
The border decoration and style indicate that the manuscript was possibly executed in Rouen, France. Due to the occurrence of the Scottish Royal Arms in the border of f. 65, it is assumed that this book was executed for a Scottish owner. The initials, joined by a lover's knot that occurs on the same page as the Arms, belonged to the owners, although their identity is unclear. It is possible that it belonged to James III of Scotland, but variations in the crest throw that into doubt. The manuscript was presented to the university by John Colville when he graduated in 1654.
