Description:
Depicts the River Tay and the waterfront of Dundee. Sir Walter Scott himself acknowledged that Jonathan Oldbuck, the titular character of The Antiquary (1816), was based partly on a family friend George Constable who first introduced Scott to Shakespeare. Constable was a native of Dundee, and Oldbuck's house of Monkbarns is sometimes thought to be based on Constable's estate of Craigie Wallace. The original steel engraving was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
