Depicts Peveril Castle overlooking the village of Castleton, Derbyshire. Peveril Castle is the principal seat of Sir Geoffrey Peveril in Sir Walter Scott's novel, Peveril of the Peak (1823). The stronghold, formerly known as Peak Castle, was built around 1080 by William Peveril who is thought to be the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror. The original steel engraving was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
