Description:
Depicts Thurso Bay, Caithness, with a view across the sea to Orkney. Sir Walter Scott's The Pirate (1821) was inspired by the legend of the Orkney pirate, John Gow, and is set partly in Orkney, partly in Shetland. Scott visited both groups of islands in 1814 when he joined a party of Commissioners for the Northern Lighthouse Service on a voyage of inspection around the coast of Scotland. The original steel engraving was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
