Description:
Title page of The Fair Maid of Perth, volume XLIII of a set of the Waverley Novels published by A. & C. Black, depicting Abernethy Round Tower, Perthshire. The Round Tower of Abernethy (near Perth) was built in the ninth century and is one of only two such towers in Scotland. Over 70 feet tall, it was built by monks from the nearby monastery and has served as a place of refuge, a belfry, and a burial chamber. Scott described the Tower in a letter to his son Walter on 14 November 1820 and in a review of Joseph Ritson's Annals of the Caledonians, Picts, and Scots for the Quarterly Review in July 1829. The original wood engraving, by William Dickes after Noel Paton, was made for the Abbotsford edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
