Description:
Title page of The Talisman, volume XXXVIII of a set the Waverley Novels published by A. & C. Black, depicting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem. Sir Walter Scott's The Talisman (1825) is set during the Third Crusade (1189-1192), when a combined European force attempted to reconquer the Holy Land from Saladin and to restore access to the most important Christian shrine, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The original wood engraving, probably by Thomas Armstrong, was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
