Description:
Depicts figures in 16th-century military attire on the shore of Loch Leven, Fife, with Loch Leven Castle in the background. Sir Walter Scott's The Abbot (1820) centres around the imprisonment and escape from Loch Leven Castle of Mary, Queen of Scots. The thirteenth-century castle, built on the largest island in the Loch, also figures repeatedly in Tales of a Grandfather, First Series (1828). This engraving was first published in the first edition of Leitch Ritchie's Scott and Scotland (1835).
