Description:
Depicts the ruins of Douglas Castle, Lanarkshire, with an agricultural labourer and a draught horse in the foreground. Douglas Castle is portrayed as 'Castle Dangerous' in Scott's novel of that name. Scott, who had visited the castle in childhood, had previously contemplated writing a drama on it in 1802, and had discussed its role in the Wars of Independence in his 'Essay on Chivalry' (1818).
