Description:
Detail of Bindings from a collection of poetry (divan) by the acclaimed Persian poet Hafiz (d.1389). Dates to the early nineteenth century and has a lacquered cover with a painted floral design. Exploring themes such as the beloved, faith and exposing hypocrisy, the works of Hafiz are still read by many in Iran and Afghanistan today and have entered common parlance as proverbs and sayings. Indeed, his influence has even reached as far as the Western World, with Edward Fitzgerald describing him as 'the best musician of words' and Ralph Waldo Emerson asserting that he has 'no peer'.
