Early veterinary science concentrated almost entirely on the horse because Europe was largely dependent on horses for transport, draught, sport and warfare. Ruini was a senator in Bologna who had previously published a book on human anatomy. Much of his Anatomia del Cavallo is original work and was hugely influential for some 150 years, appearing in many editions and translations. The first equine anatomy in English, published in 1683, was largely based on it and made use of some of the plates. Most of the plates are of dissected horses, but three, which show a flayed animal from three different viewpoints, are clearly based on the same original as the bronze horse by Giambologna from the Torrie Collection (see image ol0022).
