Description:
This is one of the oldest Scottish books. Designed to be carried in the owner's pocket for private devotion, its minuscule script and intrinsic decoration are Celtic but full-page illustrations have been added in a late Anglo-Saxon style. Possibly it belonged to Queen Margaret of Scotland (c.1046-1093) who was descended from the Anglo-Saxon royal family and whose sympathies lay with Anglo-Saxon rather than Celtic culture. Her copy of the Gospels (in the Bodleian Library, Oxford) has similarly added illumination. The Psalter has been in the Library for nearly 400 years: it is listed in a catalogue of 1636.
