Aristocrat, soldier, diplomat, scholar and ethnologist, Werner Kissling left his native Germany for the United Kingdom in the 1930s and eventually settled in Scotland. Through photograph and film he made a unique record of life in Eriskay, South Uist, and southern Scotland. This photograph illustrated his study of Hebridean building traditions. A road in Eriskay still bears his name for he directed the proceeds from the 1935 premiere of his pioneering film about life on the island, 'A Poem of Remote Lives', to projects there.
