Description:
The splendid museum hall was at the heart of the new Medical School designed by architect Robert Rowand Anderson and opened with great ceremony in 1884. Sir William Turner, Professor of Anatomy (and from 1903 Principal of the University) had broad interests in evolution and comparative anatomy and built up the impressive collections displayed in the new museum. The University New Buildings project continued in 1886-97 with the construction of the adjoining graduation hall, also designed by Rowand Anderson, but generously financed by the brewing magnate Sir William McEwan. These evocative photographs were taken by the fashionable London photographers Bedford Lemere in 1898, slipped in at the end of a large portfolio intended to record the McEwan Hall with its splendid furnishings and mural decorations. The three storey museum hall was 'laminated' in the 1950s, and many of the comparative anatomy specimens dispersed - some of the whale skeletons are now suspended in the galleries of the Royal Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street, Edinburgh - but the top storey still survives as museum and teaching space.
