The 'Theatrum Cometicum' (The Theatre of Comets) was published in Amsterdam in 1666-68, and in a second edition in 1681. Compiled by Polish historian and astronomer Stanis?aw Lubieniecki (1623-1675), it provides accounts of over 400 comet sightings throughout history, and includes allegorical engraved title-pages, astronomical maps and diagrams, many of which are double-page fold out illustrations. Much of the book is devoted to recording the observations across Europe of comets that occurred in 1664-65, but this intricately detailed hand-painted engraving, which bears the Latin inscription 'Tabula exhibens Cometas a Nato Christo quorum...', represents comet sightings since the birth of Christ as taken from historical sources.
