Description:
Owen Jones (1809 1874) was a London-born architect and designer and one of the most influential design theorists of the nineteenth century. 'The Grammar of Ornament', published in 1856, is a comprehensive collection of ornamental designs from diverse sources such as Egypt, Greece and Pompeii, medieval Europe, India, China, Pacific islands and the Islamic world. Its sumptuous illustrations were printed as chromolithographs and were accompanied by detailed surveys of individual cultures, as well as a manifesto of "General Principles" of design. The source material for the ornaments was wide-ranging, and the illustrations include examples of architecture, metalwork, textiles, ceramics, manuscripts, woodwork as well as plants from nature. This plate depicts Greek ornamental patterns.
