Description:
Three quarter length portrait of Robertson, wearing a black gown, bands and a white wig. He is seated in a red chair, his arms extend along its arms; to his left is a table on which are books, an inkpot and quills, and the University mace. The upper background consists of a crumpled hanging. The painting is a fairly early work. Robertson was a sick man when it was done, and the somewhat cramped position of the body gives a good indication of this; the face is, however, powerful. One of the books, in the lefthand corner, is interesting, for it bears in bold characters, as if it were the title, the inscription: H.Raeburn, pinxit Edin:gh AD 1792. This is the only known signature by Raeburn.
